Gabe Wilson is a sleazeball. Or a sweetheart. I don’t know which is worse.

Though they come from opposite sides of their town’s non-existent tracks, Kayla and Gabe become fast friends in twelfth-grade calculus. Kayla helps Gabe with his homework; Gabe makes her snort-laugh with his ridiculous math puns. Kayla complains about getting hit on at work; Gabe listens sympathetically (and tries to improve his technique). Kayla falls into a ditch; Gabe pulls her out.
Kayla knows a boyfriend would distract her from her goal of becoming a writer. Still, she’s sorely tempted by goofy, dependable, and admittedly sexy Gabe. But when she sees him leaving a party one night with her very drunk, very cute, and very available friend, she can’t believe she ever thought he was a nice guy.
Eight years later, Kayla is back in town to care for her ailing mother. The two are drowning in debt and facing foreclosure, and Gabe is the only one who can help. Grown-up Gabe is serious and respectful, and his new melancholy expression is even more seductive than his jokes about the squeeze theorem. As they work together to save the house, Kayla confronts a problem thornier than a differential equation: is Gabe the sleazeball who broke her heart? Or the sweetheart who will come between her and her dreams?
