But soon after their arrival, Jessie begins to notice a series of strange developments. The neighbors—and their au pairs—all seem to be hiding secrets. The mysterious yacht club Kyle is desperate to join is rife with cheating spouses, and with troubling rules of its own. And the notorious serial killer being held at the psychiatric hospital where Jessie is completing her degree seems to know more about her life than is normal—or safe.

As her world starts to unravel, Jessie begins to question everything around her—including her own sanity. Has she truly uncovered a disturbing conspiracy buried within a sunny, wealthy Southern California beach town? Does the mass murderer she’s studying really somehow know the origin of her private nightmares?

The Perfect Wife, Book 1 of the Jessie Hunt series, was about Jessie Hunt, a criminal profiler-in-training, and her husband Kyle Voss, Married just shy of two years, Jess had yet to do the paperwork for changing her maiden name to her married name, thus she was still known as Jessie Hunt, while her married name was, legally, Jessie Voss. Jess was looking to finish her last semester in college to gain her Master's degree in Forensic Psychology. Having just moved to the town of Westport Beach because of her husband's promotion, Jess was trying to adjust to life in suburbia. Kyle seemed to be having an easier time settling into the new community life than Jess was. He had a high school friend who lived just a few blocks away, and he seemed to fit in better with the neighbors and yacht club members as well. Jess, used to the life in LA, just didn't know how to slow down and take things as they came. In fact, Kyle didn't appear to care whether or not Jess was happy about their new way of life. He was a selfish, self-centered a-hole that cared more about his wants and needs than he did his wife's. Unfortunately, both Kyle and Jessie were keeping secrets...loads of secrets...from each other. The book had a Stepford Wives/Silence of the Lambs vibe to it that kept the book as an unsettling read. The more it moved along, the worse it got. There were way too many secrets, involving literally everyone, the angst and drama were off the charts. The storyline, though it sometimes followed the Stepford Wifes/Silence of the Lambs themes, had so many twists, turns, and additional nuances to keep it from stagnating. The only drawback though was it was definitely too long. For whatever reason the author chose, the story was drawn out longer than necessary. It could easily have ended a good 10-15 chapters before it did. The characters were...unbelievable...as in, there was no way anyone would believe these characters could possibly be as stupid as they all were. Nor could one be expected to enjoy such distasteful people. The only reason for reading the story from start to finish? To find out what happened and why. But to say that the characters were enough to hold one's attention would be laughable. While Jessie was a somewhat decent character, there is no way she could have been a good profiler and NOT know the villain/ness of this story from the outset. If she was as good as the author expected the reader to believe, then the book would definitely have ended well before it did. This book did not merit a five-star rating.
