Can we get Book #1 The Ex Assignment before we start reading the series
The Boss Assignment, Book 3 of the Rogue Protectors, was about the billionaire bad boy 42-year-old Antonio Andrades and 30-year-old virologist Charlotte "Charly" Bennett. The story started with a flashback to Book 1 in order to tell how Charly got involved with the crime lord Raul Ortega. Charly had been hired to work with one of the top CDC virologists to "analyze some of the planet's top deadliest and most exotic pathogens", more specifically in a lab that "was outfitted with the latest bioengineering technology". Charly was specifically tasked with the weaponized version of the Zaire Ebola virus (the Z-91 from the first two books). They were trying to find out how it mutated after Ortega had ingested the virus. After leaving the lab one evening, Charly's life took a turn she hadn't been expecting. She had been forced to help Raul escape from CDC confinement and had then been kidnapped by him. She was then kidnapped by Benito Carillo, another crime lord, and taken to Mexico. The book then jumped forward nine months to what took place in Book 2, to Charly once again being kidnapped, this time by Antonio, after just having been a hostage in Mexico. Antonio believed that Charly was the virologist who had used one of his labs to create a bioweapon with the Z-91 virus, and he needed to find a way to absolve his company and he had every intention of using Charly to find the traitor who turned on him. He was so adamant that she would help him that he threatened her life...and she believed him. Upon reaching Rio de Janeiro, Charly was once again held captive. Antonio had her locked in a very sparse room until she chose to cooperate with him. This story spanned about two weeks' time, so it was both fast-paced and frustratingly long. That made the romance of the story almost second to the mystery and criminal activity. Unfortunately for any reader who wouldn't know a lot about virology and how a virus and its antidote is created, this book had too much medical lingo that wasn't fully explained. It could make the reader feel stupid or it could just bore the ever-loving hell out of them, as it did me. All of the medical jargon was high-brow and flooded the entire story, which tended to outshine the romance of the story and made it more of a medical commentary than a romance novel. The kidnappings were a bit OTT because it wasn't just one or two, nor was it just one person doing the kidnapping or being the one being kidnapped. It seemed like everyone and his/her brother was a hot commodity and everyone wanted him/her/them. There IS such a thing as overdoing the drama, and this book definitely overdid it and the angst as well. I liked the two main characters. They worked well together and suited each other perfectly. Both were well-developed and mature, with all kinds of room for growth. It was interesting to see them do that. The emotional rollercoaster ride was rampant with twists and turns, almost overwhelmingly so. There were so many twists to the plot and storyline that just when the reader had it all figured out, something changed and it all went in a different direction While it was a decent story, it was quite OTT and drawn out to the point it became frustrating and I had to walk away several times. What would normally take me only an hour or two to read, ended up being almost a full day due to having to put it down repeatedly. I don't like books I can't finish in one sitting all that much. But like its predecessors, I did give it a four-star rating, only because I liked the heroine so much.
