When Ruey agrees to be a lifeguard at her best friend’s summer camp, she has no idea what she’s in for. Laid off from her soulless job and stuck moving back into her parents’ house means that she has no excuse for why she can’t help her friend out, so she leaves behind her job hunt and angst about the future for the woods of Northern Michigan—which somehow leads to her paddling down a river with a bunch of teenagers as one of the leaders of a week-long canoe trip.

When an encroaching storm rushes the group to pack up early, Ruey ends up stranded on the river with just a tent, a camper’s stinky backpack, and the one other counselor on the trip who both intrigues and frustrates her to no end.

Clever and handsome, Dominick is easy going—with everyone except Ruey. He always seems to find a way to criticize her: pointing out flaws and critiquing every decision she makes. But, as the night grows closer and the storm rages on, Ruey and Dominick will have to work together to make it through the storm—and sort out whatever tension is lingering between them.
