Bestselling Author Shain Rose delivers a standalone arranged marriage romance where a grumpy mafia boss will wed a free-spirited surf girl and make sparks fly.

I’m signing over my hand in marriage for six months to save my city.
That’s it.
It should be easy, except Sebastian Armanelli is my sordid one-night fling turned husband. And I’ve just found out he’s the head of the Italian Mob too.
Bastian swears he’s set on reforming the mafia though. They’re accommodating when they used to be murderous. And he’ll be amicable instead of vicious.
Plus, he agrees that it’s only six months in public. In the dark of a private night, we can do as we please. Yet, I know just how he tastes and where each one of his hidden tattoos are. I know Bastian shapeshifts as that gentleman mobster, but in the dark, he’s commanding, ruthless, unyielding.
And possessive.
He refuses to share what he’s claimed as his.
And I’m realizing that inc

Shattered Vows, Book 1 of the Tarnished Empire series, was about Sebastian "Bastian" Armanelli, the boss of the Italian Mafia, and Morina Bailey, owner of a smoothie truck and surfer girl. Bastian and Morina met at a Miami club they were both visiting. After a while, Bastian convinced her to spend the night with him. Morina, who had made a bet with her friend to talk to a man for more than 30 minutes at the club and to go with him to the first place he suggested, was more than willing to go with him...that is after she had tried to get with his head of security and Bastian talked her into going with him instead. So they get on his private jet and fly to an island together. Side Note: Something I didn't enjoy was Bastian boasting about who he slept with..., especially his flight attendant. I also wasn't used to women who were "fast and loose" as the FMC...and Morina was definitely that type of woman. She was no innocent miss, that's for certain. Both MCs enjoyed boasting about their respective sexual conquests. When the night was over, Bastian and Morina returned to Miami and went their separate ways. Morina returned to her small town where she lived with her dying grandmother. She spent her time between surfing and running her food truck. A week after their ONS, Morina was surfing in the early morning before opening her smoothie truck to the public...where she noticed an unusual crowd...and Bastian. Neither one of them had expected to meet again...and both were taken by surprise. Some secrets from the past were about to come to light...and Morena was in for the shock of her life. Bastian had business with Morina's grandmother...except he hadn't known the woman WAS her grandmother until that day. What Morina didn't know was that her grandmother was about to set her up with an arranged marriage between her and someone from the Italian mafia in order to protect her from the Irish Mafia...and that someone ended up being Bastian. That night after her meeting with Bastian, the older woman passed in her sleep. By chapter 13, I was more than ready to stop reading. This book was so overstuffed with fluff it was untenable and...I hate to say this about any book...but it was flat-out boring...and that was after just the first 12 chapters!! There was so much gunk flowing throughout this story I was all but snoozing for most of it. I don't do that with many of the things I read, and I certainly did not expect it with this book. For all the chemistry that flowed between the two main characters...and it DID flow...these two really didn't like each other. They didn't get along at all, and Bastian was constantly treating Morina like an immature imbecile...which she actually was because that's how the author wrote her. She had to be no less than 21 because she could get into clubs and drink without being carded, but she couldn't have been much older than 27 because she was that freaking naive. This girl had no head-smarts. She was written more like a flower child on psychedelic drugs from the 1960s...and that's my being nice in describing her. She was a ditz. Oh, she could make a good smoothie, she could surf, and she was old enough to have multiple sexual partners...but the author didn't make her smart enough to stand on her own two feet. She was a 20-something in body, with a pre-teen mindset...and that's exactly how Bastian treated her too...as did her grandmother before she died. No one allowed this character to grow up and mature. As for Bastian's character? This guy was a straight-up A$$h-le. Oh, sure, he was the Boss of the Mafia, but O.M.G. was he a beast with a stick up his A$$ at every. freaking. turn. He mistreated Morina every chance he got. He deserted her for several days in a row, leaving her in a strange place and out of her depth. He let other people handle her rather than taking care of her himself. Instead of talking to her, he decided he'd just keep doing what he was doing...being the boss and making her learn his commands that he had never voiced to her in the first place. And the author thought these two should be the perfect couple?! Side Note: The MMCs inner dialogue had him spouting off to himself that he "hadn’t been sleeping around or pursuing other women since the will hearing"...which made the reader question whether or not he had slept with other women after the MCs initial hook up. It had only been a week from their first meeting to the death of the FMC's grandmother dying, then another few days for the funeral and some time after that for the reading of the will. So there were plenty of chances for him to have slept with several other women in that time frame. It was a bit disconcerting how cold the two could treat each other, then like a lightning bolt be wanting to hook up...only to shut down before doing so. The author had a terrible habit of touching on even the tiniest detail of the characters' actions. For instance, the reader was informed of every time the MMC had to "adjust his trousers", or the FMC "got up and rinsed her plate", she "narrowed her eyes", he tilted his head. They sat down, they stood up, they handed the other a file, they did this, they did that...get to the blooming point already and MOVE THE FUCK ON. O.M.G.! These two MCs were so sexually frustrated because Bastian wouldn't give in to his desires to be with her, and he wouldn't take her up on any offers of "let's do this and get it over with so we aren't frustrated for the next six months". But what pissed me off was, when she offered to have a casual relationship with HIM for their short marriage, HE told her to bring her own date to the gala (where they were to get officially engaged), and HE would bring HIS own date...and they could "get their fix" with their dates before the gala. WTF?! "Do what you want discreetly beforehand. I'll ask you to marry me by the end of the night publicly." Seriously?! Oh, but then HE tells her he didn't want to take another woman to the gala. It was only HER that would be attending with a date. She insisted, and he said, "This isn't going to end well". Ya think not?! Then in a very cold voice, Bastian told Morina, "We can sleep with other people and still be married. Couples do that all the time". And that hurt her very much. UGH!!! UGH!!! They both showed up at the gala with dates, and both of their dates were touchy-feely and verbally suggestive in front of the two main characters. Both main characters were jealous of the other and, when the FMC "escaped" to an unoccupied room with her date to make out/have sex...well things didn't go as far as she wanted. Not for the lack of trying though. Her date called a halt by saying, although HE would enjoy the "revenge sex", he knew it wasn't who SHE was and that she would regret it...then he left. However, what the FMC didn't know was that the MMC was in the room, and they ended up having sex, then went out and got engaged. The next morning...they were married at the courthouse. O.M.G. This just kept on going and wasn't getting any better. This was one very screwed up, modern-day, mafia-style romance that didn't make one lick of sense. These two MCs didn't gel well together and, in fact, didn't BELONG together. They enjoyed playing head games with each other, one hurting the other over and over. Things didn't start to really click until chapter 28 or 29...right after the two got married. It was still a marriage of convenience, and they were still expecting it to last only six months, but it was as if the actual act of making it legal was a weight off both their shoulders. The emotions in this book were all over the place. The angst and the drama were astronomically high...way too over the top for the storyline. The pain each of the main characters constantly inflicted on each other was misplaced and out of proportion. It made no sense. There was some humor, but not enough to balance out the raw hate the two main characters inflicted on each other. The good times didn't outweigh the bad and that made the plot fall apart because it just didn't flow right. There were too many roadblocks that the reader had to navigate around in order to find the right path to the end. The length of the book could have been shortened by a good 15-20 chapters. It would have made more sense, and it could have earned a higher rating. The book did have some amusing moments, especially when the reader realized the whole story was about a stuffed-shirted mafia guy who was normally wearing suits that cost thousands of dollars, and a woman (child?! LOL) who was more hippie and loved crystal jewelry, read the horoscope daily, used incense and scented oils and surfed all the time. The two just wouldn't normally go together...and they didn't here either, not really. The author tried to make it work, but it just didn't coalesce too well. Books need decent main characters, a good villain, and awesome, supportive, secondary characters to earn a high rating. While this one had some great secondary characters, the two main characters had quite a few flaws that prevented them from being decent. Too immature, too much rivalry/fighting between them, and it took too long for them to develop into what they should have been all along. The villain(s)? Well, that was a major disappointment. While there was/were villain(s) in the story, the biggest problem was that there was no real back-story to show WHY the villain(s) was/were BAD. It just kind of...fizzled, and that's never a good thing. The story needed to end sooner. If the fluff n stuff had been left out, it would have. There was just too much distraction to be enjoyable...and it had SO much potential and the author dropped the ball. I can only give this a three-star rating. I just couldn't give it anything higher.
