I have to say, seeing the ratings and the comments, I may have expected more than it could deliver. I want to finish the book, as I'm JUST one chapter in, but I already despise the MC.
Spoilers ahead altho I've only read the 1st chap so idk
She has to be one of the worst MC's I've read in years. Her actions are unjustified. She is absolutely privileged, an entitled brat who cannot even fathom that some people work hard for what is gifted to her.
Her "reasons" for hating Via are completely unjustified and out of proportion, and so are her actions and thoughts. She obviously is jealous, but the fact she even goes as far as to discredit and make assumptions about Via and her own mother with no proof is wild.
And she stole Via's mail, opened it and read it, and THEN gave it to some random who broke the letter in front of you. A letter you well know is absolutely essential for her career and your own mothers feelings and career. You just stand there and feel relieved. The only prop I can give her, kind of, is the minimal self-awareness she has, admitting she is a monster for destroying someone's future with no remorse. She then kisses this random dude (1st chap kiss? A random you even said dressed like a "hobo"?) And goes to her mother, and BLAMES HER for "loosing the letter", again with no remorse or any guilt.
SHE IS SO ENTITLED! MANIPULATIVE, LIAR, DRAMATIC, ABSOLUTELY DISMISSIVE TOWARDS ANYONE AND ANYTHING.
And ik, the description of the synopsis introduces a revenge arc, so ofc she had to be a bad person for her to be redeemed forward. But i really don't see how she can be redeemed. She insults Via, dismisses her as a spoiled brat, like she isn't one, and mentally dismisses her own mother because how dare she be proud of her best ballet dancer ...
Oh the fact that she thought the dude was a hobo because he wasn't wearing brand new clothes. And the MMC not even introducing himself, being 2 years older than her and watching her 2 or 3 days a week without a single word to then approach her, tear up the letter, give her his "most precious possesion" and kiss her? What in the creep- if they at least had some chemistry... but no, she was too focused on feeling hate and envy of Via and judging the MMC until he had his tongue down her throat. Yep, thats right. Their first kiss as people who don't know each other is a french kiss. Yep.
I just wish i could finish it to find more things to complain about but i was horrified by this 1st chapter so I can't finish it.
It's so funny that you think I'm "speaking of Via in a innocent way" just because I am condemning the main character. Of course, I know there is a reason for her to "hate" Via and her mother, but the way the conflict between the 3 and their dynamic is introduced is not clever at all. So far in the chapter 1, all they establish is that the MC is quick to judge others on their appearance, is petty, is salty and is not remotely as empathetic as someone who's supposedly a "victim" tends to be. Her sister receiving more praise and love from her other should not result in her jeopardising Via's future. Sure, if the book introduced Via's and the mother's abusive and dismissive behaviour first for a couple of episodes with different examples, I would even be glad she took a stand for herself and fought back. However, if Via got in due to her own work and talent, which is what appears to be the case based on the 1st chapter, then they are setting the MC to appear unrightfully vengeful and someone ready to destroy years of hardwork and dreams for her own insecurities. I do appreciate that both of you have told me she has reasons and that the book is very emotionally immersive, and I understand that it is all based on personal taste so no hard feelings at all, i respect your opinions and receive your feedback with understanding. But I'm sorry, I do judge books based on their introductions and conclusions. A bad beginning is as bad of a sin as an awful ending in MY books. And in my opinion, this was indeed a very bad opening for a book.
Honestly, I read your comment and decided to read this book. You are SO WRONG for condemning the MC in this manner. The Via you speak so innocently of isn't even innocent. Via is very rude to the MC too!!! I'm not trying to justify the MC's character but that is a girl that feel less of herself, whose mother makes her feel less of herself... Of course she is fourteen and needs to be thought and shown love, of which in the novel it became clearer. The Via girl is the best ballad dancer, has MC's mother's undivided attention as the teacher, yet still feels the need to bully, put down or make MC who's already hurting, hurt more... That's evil too. Ps: who tore the letter wasn't some random boy but Via's twin brother. MC never wanted to tear the letter, infact she had it glued back. Do not judge a book, just by poorly reading and not comprehending its first chapter without diving deeper. Thank you.
The main character has alot of issues that unravel throughout the book. She seems like nothing but a spoiled brat but there is ALOT going on under the surface. Just a warning, This book is a roller coaster of emotions the further that you read into it.
Excellent book, I felt bad for everyone except Melody, if as a parent you don’t know how to prioritize your own child then you don’t deserve the privilege of having children. My heart cried for Daria 💕

This is the first L J Shen's book I've read and judging by the popularity and rating of the book I had high hopes. Overall I wasn't disappointed given the readability and the story. Characters were well defined and given lengthy origin stories. Author threw in some curve balls to make the story more intriguing but the tangents were slightly odd. 4/5 stars. Will recommend for those who have the time.
