Painfully Merry was about Sabrina Black, the CEO of the Chocolate Halo company, Parker (I never saw a last name for him), the financial advisor for Sabrina's company, and Joel "Chaos" Phoenix of Phoenix Security. Two things I have to say about this book. First, I can't believe I read it and, second, it was definitely NOT a romance novel. It was more of a suspense/mystery/thriller/crime book that tried to pass itself off as romantic. Instead of her uncle, her cousins, or even her brother, Sabrina was the one who inherited the family business when her grandfather passed away. Her uncle even went so far as to quit his job to take care of his dying father. While the book doesn't specify how long it had been since she took over as CEO of the company, Sabrina finally started to realize that someone was embezzling money, and even though she had her suspicions, the board of directors forced her into firing someone. That someone was Parker. A few weeks before Christmas, Parker, who lost everything when he lost his job, wanted revenge against Sabrina, so he and his only remaining friend, Chaos began planning on how to do it. When they finally made their move, all bets were off and nothing went according to plan. There was a ton of angst and drama in this book, which sadly ended in a cliffhanger. I don't believe I will read the second installment. I was disappointed in how the author wrote this as a romance novel when it should have been more of a thriller. However, I realize other readers will enjoy it for what it is. I tried to keep an open mind while I read it. I don't mind a dark, sinister aspect to romance stories, but this one went beyond the scope of believability, even for me. The three main characters were, for all intents and purposes, fully developed. While I can't say they were all mature, I will say that they needed a lot of room for growth and, in some ways, they each found a way to do so, in the most sinister ways possible. When revenge plots go wrong, anything can, and usually does, end up biting the revenge-seeker in the derriere. That held true for this book, and it didn't just hit one of the characters, but multiple. The cliffhanger that this ended on was neither as shocking nor surprising as the author might have wanted it to be, but it was definitely not captivating enough to make THIS reader want to seek out its sequel when it's finally published. I will be fair and give this a reasonable rating. Just because it didn't meet my high standards doesn't mean that it was well written...because it was. It just wasn't what I was looking or hoping for. Therefore, I chose to give it a three-star rating, just for the effort this author put into writing it. I'm certain other readers will adore it, and that's alright with me.
