Loving Whiskey by Brittanee Nicole

All it took was one shot of whiskey to let myself burn.
Cash told me loving him wasn’t a risk. He promised we would dance in the moonlight.
He swore he was nothing like the ones who broke my heart.
And he was right. He was so much worse.
But what do you do with an addiction you can’t kick?
Drink in the shadows, take shots in the dark,
and savor the buzz knowing the next morning won’t be worth it.
Because it’s not enough.
Nothing is ever enough when the person you hate is also the one you love.

A good ending to the 2nd book of this series. Quick read and good story line. Sometimes, I just rolled my eyes at the back and forth, but was happy with the ending.
Loving Whiskey, Book 2 of the Duet Falling For Whiskey series, was the continuation of the story about Grace Kensington, a matchmaker for billionaire clients, and Cassius "Cash" James, the new CEO, and heir apparent to James Spirits, the James family whiskey business. Book 2 picked up the very next day from where Book 1 ended...with Cash and Grace both heartbroken and shattered after he believed the lies told about her supposed betrayal, and the merger of his business with that of Jonathan "Jay" Hanson, who would be marrying Cash's sister, Catherine "Cat" James. Even when everyone started to tell Cash that he was wrong in his thoughts and treatment of Grace, he refused to believe them. He thought he knew her better than anyone, therefore his way of thinking, his accusations, and his treatment of her was the only thing he believed was right. No one could convince him otherwise. As in the first book of this duet, Cash and Grace fought like cats and dogs, going around in circles and finding no solution to the problem. Cash wouldn't forgive Grace, but he didn't want to let another man have her either...but then he didn't want her. It was a vicious cycle that all but destroyed their love. When one particular fight/sex session happened, and Cash told her he loved her...but all she was good for was a fck, Grace had enough and told him that was the final time she would see him...and she said goodbye. Weeks went by and Cash learned that she was now being seen all over town with a man she had been friends with for a while, a man he had met at a club he and Grace were visiting that Cash had purchased. When he saw them in his sister's office four weeks after the last time they had been intimate, he overheard the conversation between Grace and Hayden...they were talking about a baby...HER baby and he realized she was pregnant and believed it was the other man's child and had a meltdown thinking he had lost her. Cash had started seeing a therapist after the last fight between him and Grace, so he rushed to the doctor's office and asked her to tell him how to make things right between them. The doctor kept telling him he needed to ask Grace WHY she had betrayed him and his family. But he told the therapist he already had...then started thinking back to the horrible fight that ended his relationship and realize that, no, he had never asked why. He had only ever accused, berated, screamed, and said hateful, malicious things to Grace, then left her brokenhearted and crying on his floor. Almost immediately after the session with the therapist, Cash had a visit from Carter, his oldest brother, who finally told him the truth about Grace...that SHE wasn't the one who betrayed him or the family. In fact, she had done no wrong...and Carter gave him the visual proof. When Cash finally told Grace he was sorry and that he still loved her, he also said her being pregnant with another man's baby changed nothing. However, she called him on his timing...how "convenient" it was that once he knew the truth that he could suddenly forgive her, feel love again, etc...and then she told him that, even though she was having HIS baby, she no longer trusted him to not turn on her again, because he had done it more than once in the past three months. Cash's character angered me sometimes on how selfish he was (even though he had accused Grace of being the selfish one when they had the blowout fight). After discovering the baby was his he decided to tell her to be ready because he was "coming for her", and then he sent her flowers and told TOLD her they were having dinner, to be ready by a certain time. I was like, DUDE, seriously?! You screw her over how many times and then DEMAND to be in her life? HIS wants/needs/desires/demands were more important than HERS?! Uh...NO! Not happening! I just wanted to slap him from time to time! Don't get me wrong...I LOVED Cash's character, but he just deserved to be GIBBSED from time to time. This book annoyed me in that, up to Chapter 35, there was no real plot change from that of the first book. It was almost like reading Book 1 over again with the "same sht, different book/day" storyline, which was boring AF. But at the end of Chapter 46, the plot changed again...to something totally different. It was like being in a car heading down a one-way street, then suddenly it took a curve too fast and did a complete 180 that caused whiplash. It came out of the blue and was totally unexpected. And, O.M.G. the fluff n stuff just kept piling up! Every little move, gesture, thought, and deed was cataloged for the reader to notice and shove to the side to make room for the actual good stuff. And O.M.G., when one of the characters asked a question, the other's response was...stilted...at best. I.E.: "You know how we grew up?" (pause, nod from the other character) "Well..."...(another pause, another response from the other character). Seriously? Couldn't the one finish a sentence without pausing for a reaction from whomever they were speaking to?? Then something happened to put Cash's back up and made him question Grace's loyalty...again...even though he tried not to doubt her The problem, however, was that Cash said nothing to Grace about the issue. He didn't bring it up, and he left her in the dark about his struggle with trusting her. NOT a good thing. However, he didn't plan to keep secrets for long. But as Chapter 53 rolled around, the reader could feel the tension start to build, the suspense and hint that...something was about to go horribly wrong...By Chapter 55, all hell was unleashed...again, and oh, what a rush it was! This story had all the feels a romance-novel reader ever wants/desires/needs to make their heart go pitter-patter. The angst was off the charts, the drama was never-ending, and there were moments one forgot to breathe because you didn't know what was coming next, but you knew it was going to be life-altering. And it was. The rollercoaster ride was probably one of the most adventurous I've ever read and it did not disappoint...for the most part. The characters started out being a bit underdeveloped, but their maturity level grew exponentially as the book progressed. The ones that needed to grow up and learn a lesson, did. The ones that needed to let their guard down and live a little, did as well. Then there were the ones who were nothing more than A$$-wipes and needed to be dealt with. Oh, the comeuppance they got! The supporting cast was pretty damned awesome and deserves their own story...just not one that is so long and drawn out, and with (hopefully) a lot less fluff n stuff than these two books. This ending to the duet was well-rounded, well-written (to a point), and definitely worth reading. If the author ever wants to tweak it, she'd benefit from cutting back on the fluff n stuff, leaving out some of the non-essential information (of which there was an abundance), and just sticking to the meat of the story. Then, it would absolutely earn a five-star rating. However, the fluff n stuff and the overabundance of too much inconsequential information was enough to detract a star, so it only earned a four-star rating. With that said, I will still be adding it to my Keeper for the Shelves collection. It's worth a second read (or more).
