Love Unexpected was about Stassia Vale, a high school student, and her stepfather, Dominic Callahan, the high school principal. Side Note: Stassia's mom was African-American, her bio dad was Italian-American, and Dominic was Caucasian. So this book was, according to the author, about an interracial couple. Stassia first met Dominic when she was ten and had the biggest crush on him. Two years later, he married her mother, destroying all her romantic dreams and making her hate him for it. Seven years later, when she was a senior in high school, Stassi's mother died in a tragic accident. Two months later, she caved in to her feelings that she had buried during their marriage, and, unknown to her, Dominic had started noticing her for the past two years but had never done anything about the awareness or feelings he was beginning to have for her. Dominic, still grieving the loss of his first wife when he met Angela (Stassia's mom), hadn't been looking for love...and yet he found it. Seven years later, he lost his second wife. And yet, the grieving process was different. Probably because he had to focus on helping his stepdaughter deal with her grief as well...or it could have been the fact that he had recently begun to notice her as something other than his stepdaughter. During the funeral of Stassia's mom, there was a strange man who caught her attention. She would soon learn that it was her father, a man who had disappeared when her mother had told him she was pregnant. Stassia had neither seen nor heard from him in 18 years. However, the man was determined to have a relationship with her and often tried to push her into doing things his way. During a long weekend on vacation with just her and Dominic, things heated up to the point that they began an intimate relationship. Both had said it would only be for that weekend and that, when they returned home, it would be over. But things didn't work out that way, and they changed the rules. They would have a secret relationship until Stassi left for college. But things had a way of running amok and, sure enough, they did. Micah (her bio dad) stuck his nose into their business and made their life difficult, causing Stassi no end of heartache. Although the angst and drama levels were pretty normal for this type of story, the emotions included were a mixed bag of tricks. There were the hot, spicy scenes that had the emotions off-the-chart steaming, but then the next moment the emotions tanked into depression, guilt, remorse, and regret. The heartbreak was palpable and unnecessary, but that's part of the reason for the book, right? The highs and lows were such a rollercoaster ride as to create almost a physically nauseous stomach. The characters, though well-rounded and fully developed, seemed to have a role reversal. The MMC, who was 20+ years older than the FMC, was undecisive and almost immature...while the FMC was the more stable, clear-headed, and mature of the two. There were paths the author started going down then changed her mind, leaving them dangling in the wind with no closure. Some other situations were left with unfinished business and created a good deal of frustration because of it. While the storyline was good, it had quite a few inconsistencies, as well as grammatical errors sprinkled throughout the book. This made it difficult to give the book more than a three-star rating. If the author ever decided to edit the story in the future, it has all the earmarks of a fantastic book.
