Forever After All by Catharina Maura
Elena:
I’m ready to sacrifice my dignity if it will save my dying mother. Or so I convinced myself as I walked into a gentlemen’s club, ready to trade my body for my mother’s life.
I didn’t expect Alexander Kennedy to be there. I didn’t expect him to stop me. And I certainly didn’t expect him to propose a marriage of convenience.
Alexander:
Elena Rousseau, a heiress fallen from both riches and grace.
I know she’s not right for me – she’s far from the meek trophy wife I’m after. But if she’s going to sell herself to anyone, it’ll be me.

Good
Forever After All was about Elena Rousseau and Alexander (Alec) Kennedy. I have to say, with all of the negative reviews I read on goodreads.com, I nearly didn't read this book. Not that there was any cheating (that's a MAJOR turn-off for me for any book). There wasn't any...but I decided to read it anyway, and I'm glad I did. Elena was born into a wealthy family. However, when she was 16, her mother ended up in a coma from an auto accident. After some time had passed and it didn't seem like she would ever wake up, Elena's father had his wife dropped from his insurance, declared brain-dead, and moved his mistress and her daughter in and married the mistress. Elena had an older brother, Matthew, who also turned his back on his mother and Elena. When she turned 18, Elena walked away from her family and devoted her life to helping her mother in the hope that she would eventually wake up. Her mom spent 8 years in a coma, during which Elena spent her entire inheritance paying for her medical bills...this is where our story begins. Elena, doing everything she could to keep her mom alive, was at her wits' end, knowing she was no longer able to afford the medical expenses. Having tried to get her father to see reason and help, was once again turned away. She was given the option to sell her virtue at a local gentleman's club, thereby making more money to put towards her mom's medical bills than she was currently able to do, which she felt she had no alternative but to do. Shortly before going to the club, Elena had gone out with some of her co-workers to a local bar after work. Though none of them were aware, it was her 23rd birthday. While the friends danced, she went to the rooftop where she saw Alexander for the first time in around ten years. His brother, Lucian, had been her childhood friend, and she had idolized Alexander, who was seven years older than her and his brother. Alexander did not remember her, though some things she said touched a place in his memory that made him think he knew her from somewhere, which was only strengthened when she called him Alec, a nickname that only close friends and family knew. A few days later, Elena went to the club, only to encounter Lucian...and Alexander. One thing led to another and when the truth came out about her financial situation, Alec made the decision to take her home with them. Elena's mother and Alec's mother were childhood friends, so Elena was on good terms with his parent. Unknown to Elena, Alec's grandfather had made a stipulation that, if Alec wanted to be the CEO of the family company, he had to be married. So Alec offered her a deal: marry him so he could gain the position his grandfather offered, in exchange, Alec would take care of all medical bills for her mother. She agreed. There were several drawbacks to this story that may (or may not) turn readers away. First, it was 67 chapters long, which made it tedious to read at times. Second, it was quite repetitive, hence the length of the story. If it hadn't been so repetitive, it could easily have ended a good 10-20 chapters sooner. A third reason some readers might turn away from the book was that Alec was...well, he was a major douche at times. He was honest with Elena about the reasons he wanted to marry her, the major two reasons being the CEO position in his family's company, and the second reason being that he wanted revenge against Elena's brother...who had stolen Alec's fiance. He told Elena he would never love her, that he was only purchasing her body, and that there would never be a divorce because it wasn't allowed in his family. So he was cosigning her to a loveless marriage...but she accepted it because she was determined to save her mother's life. While those were good reasons to avoid the story, it was well worth persevering and eventually reaching the end. The book was full of angst, that was for certain. But it was also full of secrets, intrigue, passion, frustration, friendship, growth, vengeance...and humor. Alec and Elena built a marriage on mutual friendship and, for the most part, it worked for them. However, as I previously stated, Alec could be a douche to Elena...and he was for the better part of the book. But he was also faithful, not only to the marriage but to his promises to help Elena in every way he could. It was pretty spectacular to watch Elena go from a wallflower/doormat to a heroine with a backbone who stood her ground and got everything she wanted. It was also interesting to see the transformation in Alec as well. While he struggled to maintain his emotional distance, it was hard to do in the face of Elena's natural gentleness and kindness. Alec's character was one forged from watching the love/hate relationship between his parents and the rejection of his former fiance. To say he had a rough (though rich) life, would not be wrong. He allowed his environment to control his emotions, so he developed a hard shell around himself, which was not easy for Elena's gentle nature to break through. Elena also had a rough upbringing, especially when her family turned against her. However, unlike Alec, Elena didn't let it harden her against love and kindness. The intrigue in the story was subtle. You don't know it's there until...it's there. It will take the reader by surprise, but it's a pleasant one that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat at times...though it's a slow-burn type of intrigue that takes a back seat to the romance of the story. It's a secondary plot twist that keeps the story moving. This book won't appeal to everyone. I almost walked away from it before even picking it up. But, I'm glad I read it. Even with the additional fluff and repetition, I still gave it a five-star rating and it will be added to my Keeper for the Shelves collection...a book to be read on a cold day when I've nothing better to do and nowhere to go. Try it...you might just be as pleasantly surprised as I was.
Thank you for the review💗💗💗
