I was supposed to be attending a friend’s birthday party, not used as bait to lure out the elusive Holden Hayes. Holden was the last thing I needed. My life was already spiraling, a slow-moving head-on collision that you couldn’t swerve to avoid. In hindsight, so was his. Neither of us was looking for a relationship, but that is precisely what we found. An instant, all-consuming, soul-deep connection that few people ever find.
The problem was we both had pasts, ghosts that threatened to choke out all the light, and that’s exactly what they did. The night we crashed, we didn’t just break. We shattered. They say pain either hurts or changes you, but what about when it’s twisted? His pain was a penance, and mine was a shield. Both were dark and laced in fear, but our fate was set.
Sometimes love stories aren’t beautiful. They’re haunted.

Dig, Book 1 of the Summer Nights duet, was about 25-year-old Holden Hayes, a college student and part-time baseball player, and 21-year-old Aria Montgomery, a Callahan Brothers & Associates law firm receptionist.

A mutual friend had introduced Holden and Aria at the other woman's 21st birthday party. While both of them were instantly attracted to the other, the romance between Holden and Aria blew hot and cold for months. When they finally said their "I love you's", he kept pushing/pulling, but he never shared his ghosts or issues with her, all the while helping Aria deal with her own battles. This continued for months until things came to a head and Holden pushed her away and broke things off. After several days of isolation, Aria faced things that forced her to face the truth head-on. After a few weeks passed, she made some life-altering decisions. She moved from Missouri/Illinois to California and never looked back.

Five years later, Aria returned to her hometown with her new boyfriend, Nate Keller (who was a sports agent). Nate was in town to sign a new athlete, so Aria chose to visit her family while they were there and to introduce her new boyfriend to them as well since they'd been together for a year. In the time she was away, she had earned her degree as a licensed nutritionist.

It wasn't long before Aria learned the hard way that Holden was the athlete Nate was signing, and neither of them was happy to see the other. However, that didn't stop him from putting a move on her the first chance he had to get her alone. Although she was with someone new, and Holden also had a girl at his side, he admitted to himself that she was the love of his life and would pursue her until they were back together. The following day, they took things to the next level, even though she begged him not to, knowing afterward that she had just cheated on Nate.

There was so much angst, drama, and pain written into this story that it was an overloaded emotional rollercoaster ride. The push/pull between the two main characters was more frustrating than enjoyable...until the last 4-5 chapters. If the author had woven the words of those chapters throughout the entirety of the book, then chances of it not only having a better flow of the storyline, but it would also have been less boring and repetitious.

Although the two main characters were well-written, there was a certain lack in each of their maturity levels. Fortunately, the FMC had a backbone and didn't allow the MMC to walk all over her. The MMC needed more strength of character than he was given because he let his past rule his present and thus his future for almost the whole story. That was disappointing since he cut his ability to mature by more than half.

The book was so boring, overflowing with an information dump and inner monologue that it barely held my attention...and I was only starting Chapter 3! Unfortunately, it was even more depressing than boring. The book didn't get interesting until the last 5-7 chapters. Unfortunately, it was pretty much too late to hold the reader's attention. If the author had started leaking all of that information around Chapters 4-6, it would have made for a better story.

I only gave this story a 3.5-star rating, rounded down to 3. It had so many errors, too much information dumping, and not enough grit to keep the reader's attention for very long. I walked away from this book for 3 days after I started reading it. That showed me it was a story that I will probably forget once I finish its sequel.

This had great reviews on Amazon, and it was ok. Not one of my faves...the characters just had weird chemistry, then things happened and they went their separate ways, only to find out what happened to them at the end of the story. The story didn't make much sense while reading the book..I felt things were left out, UNTIL the end of the book...then it all made sense. Overall a good read, but again, not one of my faves.
