Eliza is forced into marriage with no idea her life will change for the better. Married less than a year, her unwilling rake of a husband is surprisingly kind to her—until his sudden death. The widowed Countess of Sunderland remains under her in-laws’ protection to raise her newborn daughter. But her abusive father is on the brink of financial ruin and has plans for another wedding.
Nathaniel, Viscount of Pendleton, gains his title at the age of 12. His kindly but shrewd estate manager becomes father and mentor, instilling in the boy an astute sense of responsibility and compassion for his tenants. Fifteen years later, his family urges him to visit London and seek a wife. The ideal doesn’t appeal to him, but his sense of duty tells him it is the next logical step.
Lord Pendleton stumbles upon Eliza on the road, defending an elderly woman against ruffians. After rescuing the exquisite damsel in distress, he finds himself smitten. But Nate soon realizes he must discover the dark secrets of her past to truly save the woman he loves.
A sweet Regency.

A Wicked Earl's Widow, the second book in the Once Upon a Widow series, was about Lady Eliza, daughter of the Marquess of Landonshire and widow of Carson Roker, the late Earl of Sunderland, twin brother to Christopher "Kit" Roker, and Nathaniel, Viscount of Pendleton, a man who became a Viscount at the young age of 12, He was mentored by Ezra Maxwell, his father's steward, who spent the next 15 years teaching Nathaniel how to be a responsible landowner, one who was compassionate to his tenants. Nathaniel also came to the understanding that it was time for him to marry. (As a side note: this book is also the sequel to the Earl of Sunderland book, as well as Earl of Darby and Earl of Brecken, all three in the Wicked Earls' Club series. So if you haven't read any of these books, the order should be read as follows: Earl of Sunderland, A Wicked Earl's Widow, Rhapsody and Rebellion, Earl of Darby, and Earl of Brecken.) Eliza's father had been an abusive man when she lived at home and had forced her into a marriage with Carson in order to increase his financial wealth. When Carson died in a riding accident and she had been pregnant with his daughter, her in-laws welcomed her into their home. However, three years after her husband's death, Eliza's father, once again facing financial ruin, was intent on forcing her to marry his elderly business partner. When Eliza informed her in-laws of the threats made by her father, they arranged for her to be secreted away to their son, Kit's, home for protection while they dealt with her odious father. As Eliza was nearing her destination, she witnessed an elderly woman being accosted by two ruffians and hurried to assist her. Unbeknownst to her, hot on her heels was Nathaniel and one of his friends. The drama and angst were very high in this story...as were the secrets and intrigue. The villains abounded as well. Eliza's father wasn't about to give up on her and had sent people to look for her. He was determined to sell her into marriage in order to add to his coffers. There was plenty of chemistry between Nathaniel and Eliza, but she was scared to accept it, believing she wasn't good enough for him because of her past with her father. Abuse tends to do a lot of damage to one's self-esteem. But the more time the two spent together, the closer they got. This story had so much intrigue it kept the reader's attention till the very final word. It was an excellent story and found a place with the other Keeper for the Shelves collection.
