A Snowflake Kiss for Lady Sophie, Book 1 of the Seasons of Love series, was about Lady Sophie Maxwell, the eldest of four sisters to Lord Tobias Maxwell, the Earl of Evans, and His Grace Raith, the Duke of Barton. Sophie, her three sisters, and their great aunt planned a Christmastide house party during which the four sisters were hoping to each find a husband in order to secure their futures and remove the burden from their older brother, Tobias. Sophie, having been the only sister to have participated in a Season before both their mother and their father had died, was hoping to find someone who would be a good match for her as well as be agreeable to assist her in providing a season for each of the sisters who might not find a match during the party. Having been misled by a rake during her only season and thus ill-treated, she had given up on the idea of finding love but was determined to find a gentleman who would be kind, gentle, and decent to her...a good companion. With her great aunt hosting the party, she also invited just enough eligible men who were seeking marriage as much as the sisters were. Some were in need of their dowry, while others were just ready to tie the knot and settle down. Lady Winterbourne had been talking with an earl who was amenable to considering Sophie as a potential bride. He was planning on being in attendance at the house party. Never having met each other, Sophie's aunt took the opportunity to point the earl out to her during the first dance, although he was standing beside another gentleman and the aunt hadn't been clear on which one was the earl. Having mistaken the Duke for the Earl, Sophie found herself intrigued...and attracted to him. When she learned who he was, though, she was appalled, especially after hearing a rather horrible comment made by the Duke regarding her. She did her best to avoid him, but she was definitely drawn to him. As for the Duke, from the very first moment he saw Sophie, he was determined to marry her...until she turned cold towards him and told him what she thought of him. Uncertain as to why she had changed so abruptly, he had planned to leave the next morning...until he realized he was snowed in and wouldn't be leaving any time soon. This story was very well-written. The plot was just enough unusual from other books to make it interesting. The characters were well-developed, fleshed out, and with enough integrity to actually be likable. The emotions were not over the top and were so real that they didn't swamp the story. The angst and drama were just enough to capture the attention of the reader and hold onto it, while the romance was like a volcano smoldering beneath the surface just waiting to erupt. This book was definitely worthy of a five-star rating and to be added to the Keeper for the Shelves collection.
